Karen Downing, Johnathan Thayer, Joanne Begiato
R3,488 Discovery Miles 34 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores ideas of masculinity in the maritime world in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. During this time commerce, politics and technology supported male privilege, while simultaneously creating the polite, consumerist and sedentary lifestyles that were perceived as damaging the minds and bodies of men. This volume explores this paradox through the figure of the sailor, a working-class man whose representation fulfilled numerous political and social ends in this period. It begins with the enduring image of romantic, heroic veterans of the Napeolonic wars, takes the reader through the challenges to masculinities created by encounters with other races and ethnicities, and with technological change, shifting geopolitical and cultural contexts, and ends with the fragile portrayal of masculinity in the imagined Nelson. In doing so, this edited collection shows that maritime masculinities (ideals, representations and the seamen themselves) were highly visible and volatile sites for negotiating the tensions of masculinities with civilisation, race, technology, patriotism, citizenship, and respectability during the long nineteenth century.

Multiracial America - A Resource Guide on the History and Literature of Interracial Issues (Paperback, New): Karen Downing,... Multiracial America - A Resource Guide on the History and Literature of Interracial Issues (Paperback, New)
Karen Downing, Darlene Nichols, Kelly Webster
R2,203 Discovery Miles 22 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Multiracial America addresses a growing interest in interracial people and relationships in America. Over the past decade, there have been numerous books and articles written on interracial issues. Despite the rampant growth in publishing, locating these often-scattered and inaccessible materials remains a challenge. This resource guide provides easy access to the available literature. Topical chapters on the most often researched themes are included, such as core historical literature, books for children and young adults, hot-button issues (passing, identification, appearance, fitting in, and blood quantification), interracial dating and marriage, families, adoption, and issues pertaining to race and queer sexuality. Each chapter includes a brief discussion of the literature on the topic, including historical context and comments on the breadth and depth of the available literature, and followed by annotations of books, popular and scholarly journals, magazines, and newspaper articles, videos/films, and websites. Other useful sections include a chapter on the depiction of interracial relationships in film, teaching an interracial issues course, and how to search for materials given changing terminology and classification issues. Indexes by race and non-print media are included.

Model program materials are included to assist librarians in establishing similar programs, and a bibliography provides a list of additional information sources.

How Gender Can Transform the Social Sciences - Innovation and Impact (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Marian Sawer, Fiona Jenkins,... How Gender Can Transform the Social Sciences - Innovation and Impact (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Marian Sawer, Fiona Jenkins, Karen Downing
R1,822 Discovery Miles 18 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection turns a spotlight on gender innovation in the social sciences. Eighteen short and accessibly written case studies show how feminist and gender perspectives bring new concepts, theories and policy solutions. Scholars across five disciplines- economics, history, philosophy, political science and sociology - demonstrate how paying attention to gender can sharpen the focus of the social sciences, improve the public policy they inform, and change the way we measure things. Gender innovation provokes rethinking at both the core and the margins of established disciplines, sometimes developing alternative fields of research that chart new territory. These case studies celebrate the contribution of feminist and gender scholars and span topics ranging from budgeting, electoral systems and security studies to the ethics of care, emotional labor and climate change.
